(WHAS11) - It’s used to help prevent cervical cancer in girls but federal health officials say Gardasil shouldn't be given to boys on a regular basis.

Gardasil is a vaccine for the sexually transmitted HPV.

A Centers for Disease Control advisory panel says its okay to give the vaccine to males who want it but doesn't want it added to the list of routine recommended vaccines.

Panel members say it's too expensive.

The series of three injections runs more than $300.
