(WHAS11) - Metro Health Officials say there will be more swine flu vaccine clinics after Thursday’s vaccine clinic closed up several hours earlier than planned.
The last to be vaccinated at Thursday’s clinic were let in right before 1:00 p.m. before they closed the gates at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. The clinic was originally scheduled to end at 8 p.m.
Over 19,000 vaccination doses were given out Wednesday and Thursday at the city's biggest inoculation effort in history.
Although Metro Health Officials did not say when the next vaccination clinics will be held, they did say those clinics will be on a much smaller scale.
Health department officials are calling this first clinic a huge success, with over 19,000 vaccinated, and say they are beginning to plan the next public clinic.
"This is not the end. This is the beginning of the public availability. We'll continue to process. We'll continue to have vaccine coming in on a fairly regular basis from this point forward," said Dr. Adewale Troutman, Director of the Metro Health Department.
The next step is to begin vaccinating every school aged child in Jefferson County. Planning for those clinics is already underway.
For the rest of the public, the plan is to hold more vaccine clinics as the vaccine continues to come in. However, at this point, there are no plans to hold another clinic on this scale.
