Consumer Watch: How to pick the right doctor

(WHAS11) -- The relationship between doctor and patient is the most important aspect of health care. But sometimes it's time to cut ties and move on.

We should feel comfortable communicating with our doctors, and he or she should empathize with us and clearly communicate what may be wrong. Unfortunately not every doctor-patient relationship is a good fit. Libby Mcmullen is a patient who had trouble with her OBGYN during her son, Greyson’s birth.

"The bottom line is that you are with a paying customer. You need to be comfortable and happy with who your provider is and you shouldn't let embarrassment about switching stop you seeking out what's going to work best for you and your family," said Mcmullen.

According to respondents on a nationwide Angie's List poll 37 percent of people have switched doctors within the last two years. Of those more than half say it was their choice. About 68 percent of them said they never even told their old doctor why they were leaving.

If you're considering leaving make sure you find a new doctor, and get in for a checkup to establish records before you do.

“Whether you decide to tell you existing doctor you are leaving is up to you. If you are comfortable it can provide some valuable feedback to that provider," said Angie Hicks from Angie’s List.

Here are the top five signs that it is time to switch doctors:

#1 Your doctor doesn't listen
#2 Your doctor is unresponsive
#3 The office is disorganized
#4 He or she isn't willing to explore your ideas
#5 Your doctor is always trying to sell you products or services
