Some people will do just about anything to look better.
Lasers are used for all kinds of procedures from hair removal to weight loss.
WHAS11's Rachel Platt shows us a cold laser that's working directly on fat cells.
It does look a little bit like something in a science fiction movie but it’s the latest in laser technology at work, all to make you look better.
Dr. Mark Meyers has just begun giving patients zerona treatments.
The idea behind the treatments is to help a patient get over the last hurdles in weight loss.
“This is for people who want to lose weight in certain areas where they haven't been able to lose it by conventional means. Like exercise and simple weight loss, a lot of us have to do that and we still have fat remaining in certain areas like the belly, maybe in women on the thighs and the buttocks,” said Meyers.
There is no pain and the treatment consists of 40 minute sessions every other day for 2 weeks.
The claim is that a patient can lose 3 inches overall or as much as 9 inches.
One patient, Kristie Bo, says she's lost 2 inches overall and 2 pounds in her first week.
Bo said, “you don't feel anything you just feel warm a little bit of warmth.”
The laser machine is targeting fat cells, Dr. Meyers said, “whats happening is this laser is effecting the fat beneath the skin and causing the fat cells to open up, causing a pore in the cell to open up and extrude the fat. It's pretty amazing technology.”
The laser is focused on a full fat cell, the cell opens up and the fat escapes. The fat floating around in your body is then supposed to be flushed out naturally.
“You drink a lot of water and its flushing the fat out of your system so it's coming out obviously in your urine. It’s a little foamy and you can tell that something's different.”
The jury may still be out on the new therapy but lots of people are giving it a try.
Before and after pictures of patients are impressive but Dr. Meyers cautions that each person will have a different reaction and the fat cells are not destroyed, they will simply re-fill given the opportunity and that means there’s still work involved after the process.
