You don’t always have to hit the gym to get a good workout. In fact, there are numerous activities we do every day that help us lead more active lifestyles. Check out these 10 easy ways to burn 100 calories that don’t require traditional working out. Plus, do three of these activities in a day and you will burn as many calories you would on a three-mile run.

Cooking for 40 minutes
Simply getting dinner ready burns 100 calories in 40 minutes. All that chopping, slicing and sautéing, plus moving around the kitchen, then setting the table and serving dinner is surprisingly active. In fact, making a huge meal like Thanksgiving dinner can burn close to 700 calories for the day.

Yoga for 20 minutes
With the weather getting nicer, it’s the ideal time to bring your yoga mat outside and practice a few poses for 20 minutes. You can also pop in a workout DVD or find free yoga workouts online to get a great calorie burn without leaving your living room. A 20-minute session not only burn 100 calories, it also tones your arms, legs and core.

Washing the car for 20 minutes
How does this sound - get your chores done, rev up your heart rate and burn calories all at once. Not bad, right? Grab a bucket and sponge, start scrubbing the car and 20 minutes later you will have burned 100 calories. Bonus points if you have to hurry up and get the car washed before you run out of quarters!

Gardening for 18 minutes
Spring is right around the corner, so it’s the perfect time to get outside and spruce up the garden. Gardening for 18 minutes burns 100 calories, and all the squatting and digging also works the legs and arms. It’s one of the best ways to get some exercise on a sunny afternoon.

Walking the dog for 25 minutes.
There is a reason studies have concluded that people with dogs tend to be healthier than people without pets. Taking your dog for a walk every day promotes an active lifestyle, and a leisurely 25-minute walk burns 100 calories.

Dancing for 20 minutes
We all know that feeling when our favorite song comes on - feet start tapping, shoulders start swaying and pretty soon you can’t help but start movin’ and groovin’. Grab your iPod or music player, turn on your favorite playlist and dance around your living room for 20 minutes.  Not only will you burn 100 calories, but listening to music has also been shown to lift your mood and reduce anxiety.

Walking stairs 11 minutes
Total 11 minutes of walking up stairs and you will have burned 100 calories. Choose the stairs instead of the elevator at work, take a few extra trips upstairs at home or discover one of Seattle’s 650 staircases. Yes, 650.  Did you know Seattle is filled with staircases and you can even take guided staircase tour of the city?

Shopping for 20 minutes
What is better than combining exercise with a little fun? Hit the shops for 38 minutes and you will burn 100 calories. That means grocery shopping, your Costco run and the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale all count as active outings.

Power Walk for 15 minutes
Grab a friend or the kids and head out for a quick power walk around the block before dinner. Fifteen minutes later you will have burned 100 calories.  The 15-minute power walk is ideal to fit in during you lunch break at work, or on the weekends.  Since you can chat at the same time, power walking is a great way to catch up with friends and family.

Cleaning 25 minutes
Vacuuming, making the bed and folding the clothes are household chores we do every day, and they are also great calories burners. Cleaning burns 100 calories in 25 minutes. Add listening to your favorite music at the same time and you get an extra mood and calorie-burning boost.
