FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- The National Rifle Association has endorsed Democratic U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler for re-election in Kentucky's 6th District.

Chris Cox, chairman of the NRA's political arm, said in a statement Tuesday that Chandler has "a proven record" of defending gun rights. That, Cox said, earned Chandler the organization's endorsement.

Chandler faces a challenge from Republican Andy Barr, a Lexington attorney, in Kentucky's most competitive congressional race on the Nov. 6 ballot.

Receiving the NRA's endorsement is considered critical in rural states like Kentucky where gun owners abound. Chandler said Tuesday he's honored to have the NRA's political backing.
