(WHAS11)-- The Fancy Farm picnic held its annual bean supper on Friday evening, a precursor to the politicians speechs on Saturday, kicking off the election season unofficially.

A large crowd turned out to hear Rand Paul describe the problems in West Louisville and he told the mostly white crowd that the Republican party needs to broaden it's appeal with African-American voters.

Reporters also took photos of Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes heading to Friday's bean dinner.
