(WHAS11) -- Over the past few years police have been working and training to be prepared in the event a shooter ever enters a local school.

School districts have have held drills to show how they would protect kids and track down an active shooter. The drills usually last just a few minutes but they could make a huge difference.

In the past school districts would set up a perimeter and then wait to enter a school.

Since the Columbine High School shooting, law enforcement now goes into the schools to actively search for people with guns.

JCPS released the following statement Friday after the deadly shooting at a Conn. elementary school:

"We have and will continue to access our security procedures to ensure we have the proper support in place to help. We are deeply saddened by the events in Newtown and our hearts and prayers go out to students, families and staff."
