LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- After more than an hour of debate the Jefferson County Public Schools Board voted 4-3 to accept a new assignment plan for elementary school students beginning in the 2013-2014 school year.
The plan increases clusters from six to 13 and offers fewer choices for parents to choose, although those schools are intended to be closer to students' homes.
Students currently in school will either not be affected or be grandfathered in and can stay at their current school.
The plan is expected to result in quicker bus rides by reducing buses and eliminating some bus routes, as well as elementary school depots, where some students had to change buses before getting to school.
Magnet schools will not be affected.
