(WHAS11) -- Floyd Central High School Journalism teacher Jim Lang was honored this week at New Albany-Floyd County's Excel Award winner for this academic year.

Lang, who has taught English and journalism at Floyd Central for 17 years, was honored in ceremonies at the school on Wednesday.

One parent, who wrote a letter in support of Lang's nomination, said that no one in education is more deserving of the Excel honor.

In an interview with WHAS-TV, Lang said he concentrates of the basics of writing with his journalism students, but also stresses the responsibility that journalists have to report accurately.

Lang admits that he knows just enough about new technology used in journalism to be dangerous. He says that his high school students actually pick up the technology faster than he does. But they are learning together.

He says that high school students were among the first to recognize the synergy between print journalism and the electronic newspapers on the internet.  Lang says that readership in one, drives readership in the other.

Lang emphasizes that the student newspaper at Floyd Central is called a student publication. Lang says he is the facilitator for the student publications but he trusts the kids. He says there is no censorship.

The Floyd Central principal says it's amazing to visit an editorial meeting of the newspaper staff, where the students tear apart and perfect their own publication.

And journalism at Floyd Central can lead to any number of jobs outside the core journalism profession. Students leave with the basic skills of writing and editing and can be positive additions to any kind of business.

And this was something of a landmark Excel Award. Jim Lang is the first teacher of journalism to receive the Excel.
