FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Longtime auto executive Thomas Zawacki has been selected by Gov. Steve Beshear as secretary of the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.
Zawacki's roles in education include a prior stint as chairman of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System Foundation.
Since 2009 he has served as commissioner of the Department of Vehicle Regulation.
Beshear said Friday that Zawacki understands the skills employers need to build successful businesses. He says Zawacki brings public- and private-sector experience to help meet those needs.
Zawacki spent more than 33 years in the auto industry, including stints at Nissan and Ford before joining Toyota. He was a member of the American team that started the Toyota plant at Georgetown.
Zawacki begins his new job July 1. He replaces Joseph U. Meyer, who is retiring.
