LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- With the start of a new school year, Ballard High School is taking steps to ensure the safety of students and staff.

The assistant principal said in order to make sure the school's entrances are secure, all exterior doors will either be locked or manned by someone.

To make that happen, Ballard and the district decided to block off the breezeways to the courtyard.

There will be a door that's monitored with an iPhone and everyone that comes in will have to be buzzed in, that way, the school can control who comes into the building during school hours.

School districts in Jefferson County start back August 13.
