LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A traffic stop has left a Louisville man facing multiple charges after he led police on a chase along Greenwood Road.
According to an arrest report, 26-year-old Derek Vessels was driving a stolen vehicle March 18 when a LMPD officer initiated a traffic stop and he refused to stop.
Police said Vessels continued to travel along Greenwood Road, weaving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed, passing cars using the oncoming lanes, all while trying to outrun officers.
Thanks to citizens, police finally caught up with Vessels on Wood Road. According to the report, Vessels was found hiding in a garage with the vehicle parked behind a fence.
Police took Vessels, as well as two passengers, into custody, but said Vessels told officers, "it's all on me, it's all on me."
Vessels gave a state during the investigation and police said he admitted to stealing the vehicle. Vessels also told investigators he hid from officers because he was going to eat the heroin he had in his possession.
Police said they recovered a baggie containing light brown residue.
Vessels and is charged with tampering with physical evidence, possession of a controlled substance - first offense, possession of drug paraphernalia, theft by unlawful taking - auto, fleeing or evading police, operating on a suspended or revoked license and two counts of wanton endangerment.
Vessels was wanted on a warrant out of Hardin County where he is facing charges of speeding, failure to maintain required insurance/security, failure to be in possession of a license and operating on a suspended or revoked license.
He is also charged with a first and third degree burglary stemming from a separate incident.
