HILLVIEW, Ky. (WHAS11) – A thief broke into a home in Hillview and stole a coin and money collection worth several thousand dollars, and it was all caught on camera.

Tom Jean owns and operates the Blue Lick Airport in Hillview, he even lives right on the property. On Monday, around 5 p.m., he was on one end of the property while a thief broke into his home on the other end.

Now, Jean is offering a hefty reward for information.

A web of security cameras caught the man breaking into Jean’s home, in broad daylight. He stole thousands of dollars worth of gold coins, $1 and $5 bills.

“This man that came in had to be coached,” Jean said, “Because his entire path, he never missed a step. And if it was somebody that didn’t know the place, he would’ve never got there.”

The thief took a complicated but shockingly direct route to the stash of money, snaking through the back of the airport property and down a narrow path to Jean’s back door and directly into his bedroom.

“Which led me to believe, and some of the police officers to believe, that he knew what he was coming for,” Jean explained.

Nothing outside the bedroom was touched. In fact, nothing in the bedroom was missing, except the money. Jean, meanwhile, was on the other side of the property with his girlfriend and her children.

It’s an unusual twist of fate that may have saved Jean’s life.

“I’m not very happy. Normally, at that time of day, 5 o’clock, if things go right, I’m sitting in my chair watching WHAS News and had I been sitting in that chair, I don’t know what would’ve happened,” he said.

Only a few of Jean’s friends knew about the money he kept in his home. But, he has a hard time believing any of them would’ve been behind the break in.

“Sometimes, we say too much and somebody picks it up, even over on the side and we don’t notice.”

Jean installed the cameras in and around his property because of small thefts and vandalism over the years.

He’s now offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

If you have any information, you’re asked to call the Hillview Police Department at 955-6808.
