LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – The second trial of man accused of murdering a witness for a separate murder trial is in its second day in Downtown Louisville.
Steven Pettway is accused of killing Troya Sheckles in 2009. Sheckles was the key witness set to testify against Lloyd Hammond, the man accused of killing her boyfriend.
This is not the first time Pettway has been in court in connection with Sheckles murder. Seven months ago he was granted a mistrial. Prosecutors said they believe Pettway murdered Sheckles because he was compelled by his friend Dejuan Hammond who is the brother of Lloyd.
A man who was with Troya Sheckles the day she was killed testified Thursday. The defense grilled him as he tried to remember exactly what happened four years ago. On the stand, the man testified Pettway was wearing dread locks, a bandanna and black clothes the day of the shooting.
"I'm sitting here and she's sitting here. If I'm going to assassinate someone I'm going to kill both," the witness said.
The defense attorney said the shooting was executed by a skilled gunman and tried to convince jurors that Pettway was too young to be that person. He was 16 at the time of the murder. She also said it was dark and the witness may have not caught a good glimpse of the shooter.
Lead detectives are expected to take the stand with other possible witnesses later Thursday.
We will have more from the courtroom throughout the evening newscasts.
