Saint Matthews Police say they've arrested at least one person they think is responsible for a string of recent car-break ins and thefts.

We first told you last week about this investigation and now some victims are hoping for closure.

"It's hard.  It's been devastating," said Ellen blice who says she travels with everything in her car.

So when she wound up in the ER at Norton Suburban Hospital last week, she was shocked to find her car was broken into and everything in it was gone.

"Everything that was personal to me in the bags, every memory card of my grandson, medications, bills, just things you carry forever. Your main carry bag of everything you've ever had," said Blice.

Now she's hoping detectives can recover at least some of it.

Police say 37-year-old Carl Nicholas Leonhardt is now behind bars.

They say he's one person responsible for a rash of car break-ins in the Saint Matthews/Dupont Square area.

They have surveillance video of several suspects using stolen credit cards at places like Target and Speedway.

Blice said, “I came home and called the bank.  There had already been about four transactions at Speedways. He went into one and spent $107.33, walked out the door and walked right back in and spent $80.22."

Leonhardt has a record dating back to 1990 that includes writing cold checks, shoplifting and stealing credit cards.

Police say many of these criminals are repeat offenders.

“We work these cases by the time we arrest them and get a subpoena to go to court they are already out of jail,” said Det. Larry Alvey of the St. Matthews Police.

But victims like Ellen; they all just want their things back.

“I'm ok with him taking my money if he needs it but there's no reason for him to take all my other things."

Saint Matthews Police say this time of year, they usually deal with less than one car break in every month.  In the last two weeks, they have worked 25 car break ins.
