LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11)-- Police continue to search for a suspect in the fatal shooting of a Kroger employee in front of his store in St. Matthews over the weekend. St Matthews police have new information that they hope will lead to an arrest.

Jack Combs, 34, was a beloved employee of the St Matthews Kroger. He'd been working there since he was in high school. He was remembered today by customers and employees

"I shop here all the time. I was very shocked, very shocked. It's very sad," customer Craig Shutte said.

"So hard on all their employees. As well liked as he was its sad. It’s like the saying , one moment they're there and the next moment they are gone," St. Matthews Police Det. Dennis McDonald said.

Combs was shot in the chest once as he got off work Saturday night at 10 p.m. He left through the front doors and went towards his car in the rear when he was approached.

“Somewhere at or near his vehicle is where he was shot," McDonald said.

He tried to make it back to the front of the store for help, but collapsed. A co-worker tried to help and called 911.

While police are getting leads, the big question on everyone’s minds is the motive.

"We don't know if this was an attempted robbery, a robbery or some kind of personal relationship gone bad," McDonald said.

Kroger issued this statement:

"The Kroger team is heartbroken as we learn of the loss of Jack Combs. We are reaching out to his family now to see how we can support them during this most difficult time. The Kroger security personnel are working closely with the detectives of the St. Matthew's Police Department in an effort to find those responsible."

Detectives are reviewing surveillance tapes and have stepped up patrols.

There is a $5,000 reward for information about Comb's death. If you have any information, you're asked to call Saint Matthews Police at 893-9000.
