LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) - A police-planted GPS device led Indiana police to a suspected armed robber who turns out to be the son of a police officer.

Joseph Johnson, 27, was arrested on Friday for a spree of robberies at southern Indiana Walgreens stores dating back to March.

The most recent robbery took place on Friday at the Walgreens on the Lewis and Clark Parkway.

When police arrived at the store, the robber led them on a high speed chase, and later crashed into a tree.

Police say Joseph Johnson didn't know, though, that the Floyd County Sheriff's Department had put a GPS tracking device on his vehicle roughly three weeks ago.

Sheriff Darrell Mills of the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department discussed the GPS device on Monday.

"It triggers for us when the suspect is moving, and his location, for us having officers running five different directions which also puts the public at risk. This minimizes the risk to what we have to expand our resources on," he said.

Johnson is the son of a Clarksville police officer.

Police say he was stealing OxyContin and selling it, and that more people could be charged in this investigation.
