LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – He's suspected in 40 jewelry heists in three states, and Friday morning Yussuan Chamizo faced a judge on charges of burglary and tampering with physical evidence.
The court brought in a translator soon after it learned Chamizo didn't speak English. He gave few details, leaving unknown where he's from or where he lives.
"I don't have family. I don't have anything," Chamizo said.
"There's a woman standing right there, but that's fine," the judge remarked, pointing to the screen showing a side room of inmate family members.
Chamizo and two others are suspected in multiple jewelry heists in Kentucky, as well as Florida and Colorado. Police arrested him Thursday for his alleged involvement in the theft of $100,000 worth of items from Genesis Diamonds on Shelbyville Road and Macy's at Oxmoor Mall.
"You're to have no contact with Genesis Diamonds property," the judge said.
Detectives would not go into details, but claim Chamizo and two other suspects enter stores through the roof.
"They are very athletic," Det. Dennis McDonald, with Saint Matthews Police said. "They are able to get in and out in a very short amount of time."
Police are still searching for the other two suspects.
"Everything they do is very professional," McDonald said. "Everything they do is well planned. They're deliberate, very disciplined."
The prosecution asked to hold Chamizo on $100,000 bond, but the judge lowered the bond to $25,000 cash only. Chamizo claimed he didn't have any money, at which point the judge appointed him a public defender.
His next court date is scheduled for July 7, at 9 a.m.
