STANFORD, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky State Police are investigating after a shootout between a suspect and a central Kentucky officer happened in the parking lot of a Walmart as bystanders watched.
Police say the incident began when a shoplifting suspect was detained at the store in Stanford. Police say the suspect pulled a gun and ran out of the store into the parking lot where he fired twice at a city police officer, who shot back.
State Trooper Frank Thornberry told WKYT-TV that people were traveling in and out of the area, which also has a fast-food restaurant, a gas station and a drug store. He says its "very concerning that shots were fired and could've hit bystanders."
But police say no one was injured except the suspect, who suffered non-life-threatening wounds.
