OLDHAM COUNTY, Ky (WHAS11) -- An Oldham County woman is facing charges of murder and tampering with physical evidence after an incident in the 9200 block of Margaret Ann Court, in Pewee Valley, that left a man dead.

According to Maj. Jimmie Laytham, Gail G. Kelley, 51, killed her live-in boyfriend, Michael T. Evans, 44.

When police entered the home at around 5:30 a.m. Saturday, they found Evans deceased with an apparent head injury. Kelley then told investigators that she struck Evans in the head with a hatchet.

The official cause of Evans' death will be determined by the Medical Examiner's Office.

Neighbors in Pewee Valley community say Kelley was a battered woman who was likely defending herself.

Kelley was in court Monday morning and pleaded not guilty to the charges. Her bond was set at $1,000,000.
