HAZARD, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky State Police say a fatal Christmas Day shooting happened during a robbery attempt.
Trooper Tony Watts told WYMT-TV that two men went to a residence at a mobile home park on the Knott-Perry County line asking for gasoline. Police say 61-year-old Ricky Sweet went to get some, and when he got back the men pulled out a gun and tried to rob him.
Police say that's when Sweet pulled a gun out of his pocket and fired, hitting one of the men. The suspects fired back, hitting Sweet.
Police say one suspect died at the scene, and they are still trying to identify the second man.
Sweet was taken to University of Kentucky Hospital.
No charges have been filed. Police say the shooting remains under investigation.
