HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) -- Human remains discovered in northwestern Indiana by a dog digging at the site of a former bait and tackle shop have been identified as a Whiting woman missing since 1999.
Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller told The Times of Munster (http://bit.ly/wwEPcP ) for a story Thursday that the remains have been identified as 38-year-old Francine Carlson. He says they identified her using DNA from her son.
Miller says several people who have loved ones missing in Lake County came forward after a Rottweiler found what looked like a finger bone with a ring on it in October. The dog led its owners back to the site, began digging and uncovered a skull.
Miller's family says the woman's family was notified Tuesday night. Her cause of death is undetermined.
