LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- An early morning shooting in the Chickasaw neighborhood left one man dead and another with life-threatening injuries, and now family members are left to wonder why.

On Saturday, family members of homicide victim 27-year-old Antwain Watkins gathered where he was killed, right near his mother's house.

They told stories about how he loved kids and how he finally found the one he wanted to spend his life with, but now all of that has been taken away, and they are left wondering what led up to his killing.

”He’s been there every step of the way for me and my kids," said his long term girlfriend Larraina Mitchell.  "He never left us...until now.”

Watkins’ family describes him as a family man.

He leaves behind two children.

His niece, Donmic Porter, says, “[He] loved the kids. Kids he didn’t even know. He was just a good man.”

Just before 2 a.m. Saturday, MetroSafe received a 911 call of a shooting in the 700 block of South 39th Street.  When police arrived, they found Watkins with multiple gunshot wounds.  He was pronounced dead on the scene at 1:57 a.m. Saturday.

Police say another unidentified male was taken to Louisville’s University Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The wake for Antwain Watkins will be held on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at W.P. Porter Mortuary. The funeral will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at W.P. Porter Mortuary.
