Louisville, Ky. (WHAS11) - WHAS11 News is gathering more information about what lead up to the shooting of former University of Louisville football player Daniel Covington by a former U of L baseball player, Isaiah Howes.
Police say Howes may have shot Covington in self-defense. He has not been charged.
Detectives are gathering evidence in their investigation, including witness interviews and surveillance video and will soon hand it off to the prosecutor.
The shooting happened at Second and Liberty streets around 2:30 Thursday morning.
Detectives tell WHAS11 that Covington was in one car and sources say Howes and his brother were in another car.
Police say Covington got out and started beating them up.
Sources say Howes shot his gun, accidentally hitting his brother in the hand and killing Covington.
Covington's loved ones are shocked.
“It took me by surprise, it’s awful,” said former U of L football player Paul Belshoff.
There are surveillance video cameras in the downtown area.
They are mounted along the perimeter of O' Malley's Corner Bar at Second and Liberty Street.
Detectives aren't saying they captured any evidence with these specific cameras but will continue their investigation talking to witnesses and compiling any video that they find of the shooting.
