LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- What happened in Hikes Point was traumatic to Rontrel Leak’s family and friends.

Leak, 21, was shot to death overnight. Hikes Point is a low crime area not known for this kind of violence. Now his mother is determined to find his killer.

"He don't deserve that it's not something that's supposed to happen and I will walk this city over to determine who shot my son," Leaks mother, Samantha Hayes, said.

Toby Hoeghton and her daughter rushed out of their front door after hearing gunshots only to see their loved one bleeding.

"I ran over there to him to place a towel on his chest to stop the bleeding but it wouldn't stop it was going out profusely," Hoeghton said.

"It was all happening so fast I was trying to hurry up the ambulance. I kept calling them telling them hurry up, hurry up," Leak’s friend, Nikki Fusting, said.

Leak was rushed to University Hospital where he died within an hour from his single gunshot wound.

He didn't live at the 3200 block of Orchard Manor Circle where he was shot but neighbors say they've witnessed a lot of strange activity in past weeks.

"I've seen people come back and park there that don't live there waiting on someone that they know," neighbor Michelle Mitchell said.

Leak's criminal past includes drug-related charges, dating back to 2011. But his mother says what happened at the 3200 block of Orchard Manor Circle off Hikes Lane is something no mother should ever have to endure.

“He's just not that type of kid he had problems and did his own things but he did not deserve to die," Hayes said.

Witnesses say they saw two young white men run from the area after the shooting.

Police have not made any arrests and do not have a motive in this case. The police are urging you to call 574-LMPD with any anonymous tips.
