LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Two men are facing charges in the beating death of a man in a Portland neighborhood.
James Newton, 44, was found dead in the 300 block of North 21st Street.
Relatives that found his body are still in shock and police are now talking about the two arrests.
"The guy was alright. He didn't deserve that." Fred Jones said.
Fred Jones said Newton was a kind neighbor that got along with everyone along North 21st street in Portland. The arrest of Joseph Carter and Sammy Gibson has him in shock.
"It's my neighborhood and I don't want anyone to be killed in my neighborhood," Jones said.
Carter was arraigned on Monday, March 10. He is charged with 1st degree murder and robbery. The judge ordered Carter not to have any contact with Gibson and the victim's family.
Police said Newton was found beaten in his home on North 21st Thursday, March 6. Police said the men met Newton earlier in the day and were acquaintances.
Relatives across the street made the discovery. Melissa Logan was with her boyfriend when he found his cousin.
"He was a good person. He really was," Logan said.
