LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Police said 49-year-old Paul Whelan struck a Shell gas station pump with his 2001 Ford Taurus on Feb. 11 at 2:28 a.m. in the 310 block of Huntington Park Drive.
According to the police report, a motorist saw Whelan hit the pump with his car and leave the scene by driving over a curb and into oncoming traffic. Police were able to locate where Whelan lives by information provided by the motorist.
An officer went to Whelan’s residence, located on Huntington Park Drive, and began patrolling the area for the Taurus; it was during the patrol that Whelan pulled into a parking space and the officer began to investigate, according to police.
According to police the officer could smell alcoholic beverages on Whelan’s breath and had blood shot eyes.
Whelan, at first, told the officer he consumed more than two alcoholic beverages upon exiting the Taurus, but he later said he had five or six beverages before operating his vehicle, according to the police report.
Police said there was less than $500 worth of damage to the pump at the Shell gas station.
Whelan is charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of an accident and criminal mischief.
