(WHAS11) -- An argument over a small truck trailer led to an argument and gunfire outside an Oldham County man's Goshen home Monday afternoon.

Emmitt Pendleton fired one shot, killing Richard Hild after Hild came onto Pendelton's rental property along U.S. 42 on the corner of 393. Pendleton is charged with gun possession because he is a convicted felon and is barred from owning one. He is not charged with causing Hild's death.

Oldham County Police are still investigating and may consider self-defense in the case. Officer Sarah King said it is unclear why Hild came to Pendleton's property and could not speak on the nature of their relationship.

Hild died at the scene on Pendleton's property, at the front of the Wanaja Horse Farm. Pendleton does not work at the farm and the home is unaffiliated with it.

The farm's owner, Jane Retamoza, said Pendleton has lived there 11 years and was unaware of his felony conviction. She said he never caused any problems and got to know his family, noting she watched his grandchildren grow up there.

If you have any information about this incident you are asked to call the Oldham County Police at (502) 222-1300 or (502) 222-0111.
