LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Preying on people when they're at their worst…. as of Tuesday night police are searching for a man accused of breaking into a home during a funeral.
But he didn't know the victim's neighbor was watching-- and recording him on surveillance video.
Now, police are trying to find him and hold him accountable.
Police say the man targeted a grieving elderly woman who was attending her sister’s funeral on Monday, May 20.
“Money and jewelry, they might have wanted drugs, I don't know, but what we had wasn't anything that was going to make you high,” the woman, who doesn’t want to be identified, said.
The suspect broke into the 84-year-old victim's home while she was at her sister's funeral.
Her late sister's home, just a few miles away in Audubon Park, was hit moments earlier.
In that case, the burglar fled after setting off a security alarm.
“I figured they was hitting us from being in the paper for funerals, because the funeral was in the morning and we would be gone about that time,” the victim said.
The burglar attempted to familiarize himself with his surroundings, even circling the block twice before breaking into the home.
What he didn't notice were the security cameras.
They captured what appears to be a silver Chevy Monte Carlo with tinted windows.
The man eventually parked the car in the victim's driveway.
He then got out, kicked in the front door, then stole jewelry, money and other valuables, which he carried away in a pillowcase.
The victim is hopeful he'll soon be caught by police, before he can target another grieving family.
“It's bad enough when you lose them, and then you come home to that, it's not fun. That's for sure,” she said.
Anyone with information about the burglary is urged to contact police at 574-LMPD.
