LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- An arrest has been made in connection with a double shooting that happened on Exeter Avenue April 22.

Joseph Smith, 87 of Louisville, was arrested Tuesday after police said he and his wife were shot during a domestic altercation last week.

Police said the couple was discussing an ongoing issue about an odd scent when Smith told his wife "this is the day I'm going to kill you  and myself."

According to the report, Smith then became physically aggressive with his wife and tried to choke her before he pulled out a gun and shot her several times. Smith also shot himself.

Smith's wife was able to leave the home on her own and call police. She was transported to the hospital for treatment.

Smith is charged with attempted murder - domestic violence, assault - domestic violence, terroristic threatening and wanton endangerment.
