ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (WHAS11) -- An Elizabethtown doctor is facing serious charges Thursday night and is accused of giving women birth control that wasn't approved by the FDA.
The owner of Bluegrass Women’s Health Care, doctor Cahn Vo, in Elizabethtown is accused of importing Non-FDA approved birth control into the country.
But it’s what federal investigators say happened next that really disturbed women who spoke with WHAS11. The birth control in question is the IUD, a device placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy. Doctor Vo is accused of inserting those non- FDA approved IUDs into his patients.
There is an FDA approved version of IUD that is widely used in the United States. Federal investigators say doctor Vo passed off a foreign version of the device as the more expensive, approved version and billed private insurers and Medicaid for the higher price. Doctor Vo now faces charges of smuggling, misbranding, health care fraud, and smuggling.
At this point doctor Vo has only been indicted, not convicted of anything. If he is convicted at trial he faces up to 233 years in prison and more than $3 million in fines.
