JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WHAS11) -- An Indiana State Trooper was assaulted late Tuesday night and now a woman is behind bars facing charges.
According to a news release, a trooper from the Sellersburg post approached a woman panhandling near the the intersection of Hwy. 31 and Court Avenue and he asked her to move away from the road for her own safety.
Later in the evening the trooper saw the woman again and approached her. Police said the trooper stayed in his vehicle and began talking to the woman, but she refused to identify herself. The trooper then tried to exit his cruiser, however, he said the woman ran toward the cruiser and tried to shut the driver's side door.
After trying to close the door on the trooper as he exited his vehicle, police said the woman ran and the trooper followed her. As he approached the suspect for a third time, she turned around and began hitting the trooper.
The woman was taken into custody and identified as 32-year-old Jennifer Renea Trew of Jeffersonville.
Trew was taken to the Clark County Jail and charged with battery and resisting law enforcement.
