(WHAS11) -- A Jefferson County man once accused of raping and sexually abusing a 12-year-old has now pleaded guilty to two counts of wanton endangerment, he was sentenced Monday.
David Goodwin was sentenced to six months in jail with release for work at the Community Corrections Center and five years probation.
Goodwin is the ex-boyfriend of the victim’s mother and knew the girl very well, but Goodwin’s attorney said the victim did not report what happened until 2011.
The Commonwealth Attorney’s office said they would rather make this plea agreement than have a long drawn out trial where it could have more negative emotional affects on the victim if she had to take the stand.
“Trial is difficult for everyone, but for a child, it is even more difficult,” Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Alicia Gomez, said. “What if the jury comes back with a result that is not good for the Commonwealth? How does that affect the child?”
“I think everyone walked away happy in some respect and dissatisfied is some respect and realize on both sides it could have been a lot worse,” Artie McLaughlin, who represents Goodwin, said.
