CAMP TAYLOR, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Two Camp Taylor firefighters filed a civil complaint on Monday against the Camp Taylor Fire District and Deputy Chief Steve Adkins.
George Givens and Michael Killebrew claim Adkins created a sexually hostile work environment that included making inappropriate sexual comments and gestures when the men asked for lunch breaks.
The Board of Trustees responded in a press conference on Tuesday.
“We take this very seriously. We were proactive in getting an investigator independently to talk to the people on staff with the fire department,” Alan Lewis, board chairman, said.
Lewis said the board hired consulting firm EEO Guidance to conduct an internal investigation last week after being contacted by the attorney for the men. The investigation also includes looking into claims of physical harassment including pushing, hitting and striking both men in the testicles.
The men also claim Adkins made racial slurs against African Americans knowing that Givens' step-daughter is bi-racial.
All men are remaining on the job while the internal investigation is ongoing. In a press release, Lewis stated that the board will likely move to dismiss the lawsuit even though admitting their internal investigation was not complete.
