LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11)-- A threat to kill children, a home invasion and a suspect tased.
Police said it all happened in historic old Louisville Tuesday night when a man broke into a family’s home off of Ormsby and said he was armed and would kill the owner’s children.
When police showed up, an 8-year-old girl was hiding in the attic and told them a man kidnapped her dad.
“It's shocking. It's truly, truly shocking that you don't even get to see your neighbors move in before somebody else is trying to take advantage of them,” Gerald Hampton, a neighbor of the victims, said.
Hampton lives down the street from where this home invasion took place.
“It’s a shame there is an element on the perimeter of Old Louisville that's trying to eat it's way in,” he said.
He said the person whose home was broken into just moved in a few days ago and has several children.
Police said the victim's 8-year-old was hiding in the attic and added that the suspect, Elijah Carter, choked his 6-year-old son.
“We didn't hear anything, we bolt our door at night,” Hampton said. “You don't really think about something like that happening in one of the historic mansions downtown.”
Carter came in through an open window and made the victim carry a TV to the car and drive off, police said.
After the home invasion the suspect made the victim drive him here to a PNC Bank on 4th Street and demanded the victim take out $200 from the ATM.
Police spotted the car at the bank and tased the suspect as he tried to flee.
Police said the suspect and victim didn't know each other and the crime appears to be a crime of opportunity. The victim was not injured and the children are okay.
The suspect remains in jail on a $50,000 dollar bond.
