FRANKFORT, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A young mother is dead and her former lover behind bars. Early Friday morning Frankfort Police responded to the 100 block of Ewing Court and discovered 28-year-old Gypsy Reyes' body.

According to a witness, Reyes' former boyfriend 41-year-old Brian Reed showed up at her apartment on Thursday night. The witness told police Reed took Reyes to a back room.

"They heard screams...and an apparent assault," Major Fred Deaton said.

Deaton said the witness asked Reyes if she wanted the police but Reyes declined. The same friend came over on Friday and saw Reed in the apartment and then saw Reyes' body lying on the floor covered by a blanket.

Friends said they knew Reyes and Reed had gotten into physical altercations in the past but never expected things to turn deadly.

Police said Reyes had even taken a protective order out against Reed a few years ago.

Those who knew Reyes describe her as very lovable and talkative. She has two daughters. Police said she died from blunt force trauma. Reed is being held at the Franklin County Regional Jail.
