EVARTS, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky State Police are investigating after the former mayor of an Appalachian town was found dead in his burning home.

Kentucky State Police told media that the fire was suspicious and that "foul play is suspected" is the death of 59-year-old Ronnie King. Police say King's body was found after a blaze was extinguished Monday at his home in Evarts, a Harlan County town that is close to the Virginia border.

Trooper Shane Jacobs said King's body has been sent to Frankfort for an autopsy to determine his cause of death. He said police aren't immediately releasing more information.

King served the city of Evarts in the late 1980s and early 1990s as a city councilman and as mayor.
