LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The bodies of a mother and son were found in their Highlands home. Police were called out to do a welfare check Monday afternoon, because the residents of the house had not been seen or heard from in days. Inside they found two people dead but how and for how long remains a mystery Monday night.
Most of the neighbors on the busy 1000 block of Baxter Avenue in the Highlands say they would sometimes see the residents of the home on the corner of Baxter and Winter come and go, but they did not know them well enough to be concerned if they did not see the two for long periods of time.
Still, they were stunned to hear the two were found dead at about 4:30 Monday afternoon.
Police say there is no obvious sign of foul play, but they are still looking at all possible causes of death. They also did not say exactly how long the two had been dead, but believe it had been days.
While neighbors may not have noticed them missing, friends and family members of the mother and son did. Barbara Kutnicki had not heard from her friend, the mother, in about a week and a half.
“Then I get a call today that nobody else can find her she was supposed to show up at a planned event last night and she didn't”, said Kutnicki.
The deceased woman was a long time resident of the Baxter Avenue house, however her ex-husband, says their son had only moved into the home two months ago. He tells us the 43-year-old cancer survivor was living with his mother while he recovered from heart trouble, a situation Kutnicki thought was working out fine.
“I thought all was going to be well, then I find this out, I'm shocked, I'm shocked”, said Kutnicki.
The coroner has not released the names of the deceased nor the cause of death.
