LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- While kids were playing outside the City View Park Apartments at 11th and Muhammad Ali, shots were fired from an SUV. One bullet hit an11-year-old girl in the leg and shrapnel hit a 7-year-old child.
Kia Harris' kids were outside when it happened Saturday night.
“It could have been one of my kids,” said Harris. “It’s pretty scary.”
It was just after 9 p.m. and the sun had just set at the apartments. The parking lot area was filled with kids playing outside when the gun fire erupted.
“It was very chaotic,” said Harris. “A lot of mothers couldn't find their kids because they were playing with the other kids up and down the street. I mean kids were everywhere.”
Metro police soon blocked off the area where bullet cases could be found on the ground.
Police believe the shooting might have stemmed from an argument.
After receiving information on two suspects, police arrested Willie Simms, 25, and Dalisha Jeffery, 27. They have both been charged with two counts of assault and one count of wanton endangerment.
But the arrests are no comfort to Kia Harris.
“It actually just motivates me to want to move,” said Harris. “I don’t have that advantage to do that right now. But that’s the mind set its put me in. My kids and I have to go. It’s not safe here.”
The two injured kids were taken to Kosair Children's Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and were released on Sunday.
