LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Nearly 24 hours after Michael Chester died, police made an arrest in the case. Darrell Jackson, 18, was arrested for murder Tuesday evening without incident, according to Metro police.

Police spokesperson Dwight Mitchell says LMPD 4th Division officers recognized Jackson outside in the 43500 block of Georgetown Place. Jackson was taken to Metro Corrections, facing charges of tampering with physical evidence and murder.

Anthony Gatton heard the gun shot next door to his apartment Monday afternoon and realized his neighbor was in trouble.

“I saw a shadow go past and I came outside the door,” Gatton said. “I saw a black man running down the steps and I ran after him. By the time I got to the bottom of the steps I heard her [Chester’s wife] screaming for help real loud.”

Gatton ran back to help his neighbor. Chester’s wife told Gatton that her husband had been shot in the presence of her and the couple’s three-year-old daughter.

Police say the victim and suspect are known associates and it was an altercation that led up to the shooting.

“I knew he was going [to die],” said Gatton. “He died once on me with her [Chester’s wife] screaming. We brought him back. I do not know how it happened, but he came back.  He eventually died at the hospital.”

The 27-year-old father leaves behind a wife and daughter, which is why Gatton says he would trade places with his neighbor who he has only known for six months.

“He is a young man, he has a baby, he has a wife, he has a lot in the future,” Gatton, who is 47 said. “Now, he has nothing.”
