LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Cynthia Johnson, 44, was fatally shot on Monday night near 39th and Broadway.

She was a member at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ on Jefferson and her pastor said she was a recovering addict on her way to a group meeting. Johnson and four other women stopped in a convenience store and were allegedly followed out by two men who tried to rob them. Friends say Johnson spoke up and was shot.  Johnson was a mother and grandmother. Ferguson met with the family Tuesday night.

“They are just devastated because she was doing well,” Ferguson said.

Ferguson said Johnson just joined the church in September and wanted to give back.

“I always thought it was interesting because she came in wanting to volunteer to clean the church, and I think that speaks to her character,” Ferguson said.

Police have not named any suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call the anonymous tip line at 574-LMPD.
