LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – As police investigate the city’s latest homicide, community members in the Russell neighborhood are grieving. The shooting happened just before midnight Sunday near the City View apartments on Ninth and Magazine.
"It don’t make sense, it don’t make sense,” one neighbor said Monday morning, after learning the news.
Just one block and eight days separates the murders of Deionte Stokes and Derrick Bussey. Family said the two young men were friends. Many people were still raw with grief from Deionte's death when they learned of Derrick's, Monday morning.
"It’s time to come together, everything is so crazy now- the killings among killings, among friends, among families,” neighbor Crystal Basemore said.
Police said Deionte was gunned down on 10th and Magazine last week. Sunday night Derrick was shot on his way home from work near 9th and Magazine, according to friends.
Some neighbors said the violence has them afraid to walk outside. As for police, they too, said they're concerned.
LMPD’s Dwight Mitchell said, “Every time we have one of these shootings it’s an implication upon our city and not necessarily any geographical part. But it’s Louisville as a whole and anytime we see violence on the rise, in particular the homicides where human life is taken, it should be a great concern to all of us.”
For those who know Derrick and Deionte the concern is real but they said it's not enough.
Begging for the support of their community to help put an end to the violence, friends and family of the young men said fighting back together is now the only option.
"I pray every day that we all could just come together as one unit, one unit. That’s the only way were going to make it,” Basemore said.
Police are still investigating both homicides. If you have any information you can call their tip line, that number is 574-LMPD.
