Investigation into Louisville gas gouging to begin immediately

(WHAS11) - There is news of an investigation into high gas prices in the Louisville area.

Kentucky's Attorney General has launched a probe, asking gas distributors why the prices at Louisville's pumps are so much higher than the rest of the state and most of the country.

If you live in Louisville, you know the drill, buy gas out of town when you can because it's cheaper. A lot cheaper than the $4.20s and $4.30s you're paying at Louisville pumps.

Suspicious enough is the disparity in gas prices between Louisville and the rest of the state that Kentucky’s Attorney General has launched an investigation.

A spokesperson for Marathon Oil says the attorney general will find the answer to the Louisville gas price jump is simple, RFG.  In 1995, Governor Brereton Jones ordered Louisville stations to sell a special blend of reformulated gas, RFG, as a way to cut air pollution.

Watch this story

Republican Congressional Candidate Anne Northup says if democrats are looking to place blame for Louisville’s high gas prices, look to their former governor, Jones.

Both Northup and her opponent, Congressman John Yarmuth support the AG's investigation and both say Kentucky or Washington should push to let Louisville sell gas that's less expensive to make and deliver.

Of course there is price gouging, no matter what is going on if there is a holiday or a special event the prices go up. What happens to the gas that is already in the tank that was bought at a cheaper rate? They sure don't wait until the tank goes dry before they raise the price.

gas has went up twice on national turnpike and both times the price of oil had dropped the day before.

if you go down i65 to lebanon junction gas is almost 10-15 cheaper per gallon...

Look at the prices in Elizabethtown and Radcliff to Louisville. E-town definitely is gouging.

My opinion addresses the amount of gasoline we use in addition to cleanliness of the air we breath idling vehicle that are not being actually driven at the time is a gross negligence in many ways. We need to take this simple need and turn it into a law.

Here is a tip! Don't buy gas if it is to high! That $107,500 from those companies just wrote a fat check to the government thanks to people whining to the.......government. I don't see any refunds given to folks who bought the high priced gas.

The sad thing is that the oil companies are "overcharging for diseal" as it cost less to refine. I used to purchase it for 50-60cents cheaper on the gallon. Just look at the cost presently and do the math. With most everything being transported by large Diseal trucks the cost of "everything" has gone up. NONE of the Politicians have discussed the cost of diseal. Of course this could be because of the kick back ($$$)from the oil companies??

Why is it that the price per barrel of oil is slowly decreasing while the price of unleaded gas per gallon is slowly increasing!?!? What's wrong with this picture!?

There is no doubt that it is occurring. Just needs to be proven.

it is always higher and fluctuates too much and too often for no reason. I base this on the surrounding areas as I travel.

The price of a barrel of oil could and has been $36-$38 a barrel and not one cent price drop has occurred. But, if some speculator suggest that the price will go up the pump price climbs 20-30 cents. Gouging?????????? YES. And who is going to do anything???? NO ONE. They all have their hands in the till.

Clearly, a monopoly in lock step.

Of course there is. How else can you explain when a barrel of oil drops $3 a barrel and gas prices drop 1 cent a gallon, but when a barrel of oil goes up $1 a barrel then gas prices go up by 30 cents a gallon. Should not the oil companies and gas stations be held accountable for their practices??

yes and the extra pricing should be given back to the customers in the form of lower gas prices at the pump.

Okay, so now that the people of Louisville were getting ripped off and it has been confirmed, how are we the consumers who paid these extra amounts supposed to get refunded?

Just the opposite. Gas cost today is 1.83 and i am seeing prices as low as 1.76

What happened to the media keeping on top of this???? Yes, prices are lower but my husband got gas in Cincinnati Sunday for $2.10. Why is Louisville still paying 30 - 50 cents more per/gal than others? You say you are investigating but investigating to me is staying on top of the story and putting pressure on those people who need to give answers. It's obvious that we are getting robbed by someone. Don't let this happen.

just look at the difference between Simpsonville and Louisville - 20 miles .10 - .18 cents

They should look at the price of Disel in Highview. The Circle K at Fegenbush is charging .50 MORE a gallon then Old Shep., Dixie and other areas in Louisville.

I think it is about time someone stood up for the people of Louisville. Doug Hawkins is doing the right thing by petitioning the governor and I support him all the way. I urge everyone in Louisville to visit www.doughawkins.com and sign the petition.
