It comes one day after Beshear declared a state of emergency in Kentucky in an effort to prevent price gouging.
In a phone interview with WHAS11’s Joe Arnold on Saturday, Beshear said “the oil companies are raping the citizens of Kentucky.”
Stay with WHAS11 news for further details. Here is the Governor’s news release:
Statement by Governor Beshear on reformulated gasoline:
“As we monitor the situation in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, we have received information that the supply of reformulated gasoline (RFG) will be severely limited for several days, which could escalate the price at the pump even further for consumers in Louisville and northern Kentucky. Therefore, I plan on Monday to formally request from the federal Environmental Protection Agency a limited or temporary waiver from the use of RFG.
We are doing everything we can to minimize the burden on Kentucky consumers. This is one tool at our disposal. We cannot – and we will not – hesitate to use it. Our hope is that the EPA will positively respond to this request within 24 hours.
A waiver on RFG would likely last two to three weeks, depending upon supply issues as they continue to develop. I will continue to monitor this situation, along with senior members of the Energy and Transportation Cabinets, to ensure we are doing everything we can to minimize price escalations.
I also want to assure all Kentuckians that we will continue to work with Attorney General Jack Conway to ensure that predatory price gouging is not being inflicted upon Kentucky consumers during this crisis.”
