Do you think the Harley plant should be moved to Kenucky?
(WHAS11) - Shelbyville, Kentucky is days away from learning if a Harley-Davidson manufacturing plant will relocate to their community.
There's growing optimism that the motorcycle manufacturer will build a state of the art facility there and hire 1,500 new workers.
"I’m excited, the community is excited, no negative on this one," says Gary Tapp Kentucky State Senator.
Sen. Tapp is in meetings with the company and union representatives. He says he believes Harley will move its plant from York, Pennsylvania to Kentucky.
If so, four models would be built at the Shelbyville plant, making it their most profitable in the US.
The Harley-Davidson dealership off I-64, a few miles from where the plant may be built, say they would expect increased profits and tourists.
According to Tapp, nearly every hurdle to turn the idea into a reality this has been cleared. "Get the okay, break ground in January first roll over in 18 months,” said Tapp.
A public hearing will be held Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Shelby County High School to discuss the plant and a change in zoning for the farmland owned by Norfolk Southern Railroad.
