Fall is here and with winter just around the corner the farmer's markets around town are closing for the season making it difficult to find locally grown food.

One local company, however, is trying to get the farmers' produce into the hands of the consumer.

Grasshoppers Distribution is Kentucky's only farmer owned food distribution company.

Their main goal is to bring local farmers and consumers together through community supported agriculture or CSA.

“Our CSA is a multi-farm CSA. Consumers will pay up front and each week the can collect part of the harvest,” said Lindsey Gibbs.

This year Grasshopper is trying something new, a winter CSA.

“Our winter CSA box, the program will run for 13 weeks, from the beginning of December to the beginning of March,” said Jim Earley, GM of Grasshopper.

The boxes will be filled with 3 to 4 seasonal crops like, sweet potatoes, potatoes, winter squash and greens.

“All the good stuff that grows in the fall and winter. It will also include half a gallon of locally produce milk and a dozen farm fresh eggs every week,” said Earley.

Jim says it is important to support our local farmers and to know where your food is coming from. “

So it's not being shipped and trucked from all over the place it is coming from with 50-60 miles of Louisville,” he said.

This saves fuel, energy and money. It also provides the consumer with the highest quality of food. Everything in the winter CSA boxes will be organic or all naturally grown.

“They're just better, they taste better, they're fresher, they get to their destination more quickly and everyone benefits from that.”

The deadline for the winter CSA sign up is November 20th and Grasshopper is only accepting 200 members this winter.
