Some Willow Creek residents saw firefighters Sunday but they weren't responding to blazes.

They were preventing fires from starting in the first place.

The Worthington Fire Department used Home Depot associates to inspect older homes in the neighborhood Sunday.

Crews made sure all residents had working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

They even installed them for free for residents who didn't have them.

“Smoke detector wasn't exactly up to par, so they gave me a free one installed it for me, showed me how it worked, I say they're really informative. I was impressed by them, really,” said Jeff Larmee, Willow Creek resident.

Firefighters also warned that stoves and ovens commonly start fires during the holidays.

They say when you start cooking to stay in the kitchen while those appliances are on.
