(WHAS11) A federal grant of stimulus money is going to help more children in Kentucky get health insurance.
The K-Chip program, Kentucky Children’s Health Insurance Program, helps insure children whose families can’t afford it, but many families who are eligible don’t even know about the program.
On Tuesday, Governor Steve Beshear announced that $250,000 in stimulus money will create a new program called “Through Any Door."
It will automatically screen families who apply for other assistance, like food stamps or home energy assistance, to see if they also qualify for K-Chip.
“In a time of economic strife, parents should not have to choose between putting food on the table and buying medicine for a sick child,” said Beshear.
In the last year, nearly 32,000 additional children have been enrolled in the K-Chip program; that’s more than 2,000 children enrolled every month.
