LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Driving is tricky enough in winter weather, but driving a rental car you're not familiar with can be even worse.

Most Americans have had their share of winter weather - but it's only February, and there's still time for more misery from Mother Nature.

If travel will take you to a cold climate and renting a car is necessary, it may not be the best time to try to save cash on the least expensive option.

When planning ahead, choose a vehicle with winter weather in mind, preferably with all or four-wheel drive. You never know what conditions will look like when you land. Before driving away with your rental, the national highway traffic safety administration advises taking a moment to familiarize yourself with the vehicle, locating things like the hazard lights.

Also check that tires are properly inflated, and know how to access the vehicle's spare. Inspect wipers and blades -- it's possible winter's already taken a toll on blades. Wiper fluid can drain quickly when driving through a storm.  You may also want to travel with an ice scraper.

Make sure you leave the lot with a full tank of gas. Winter weather can leave a driver on the road for longer than anticipated with your car running just to stay warm. You don't want to be jammed on an interstate unable to exit for fuel.
